What is Physician Executive
Coaching?
What we know, is that physicians are
typically linear thinkers,
who want structured,
evidence-based
approaches to their
challenges.
Our Physican Executive Coaching methods are based on just
that.
At its most basic, executive coaching is a process that has
its core in
validated
techniques to explore and change
behavior.
While relatively new to the healthcare
world, executive coaching is gaining
momentum with physician leaders and executives, as it has
demonstrated proven return on investment
(ROI) for many other industries. A recent study found that
almost one-third
of healthcare executives are now using, or have recently used, an
executive coach to help boost their professional performance (Morgan
Executive Development Institute, 2007).
The coaching work that we do is very
specific. It
is not therapy - it is a very action-oriented,
forward moving process where we target the key behavioral changes that
you can make to have the greatest impact on your professional
life. In a time-bound, measurable way, Physician Executive
Coaching’s job is to:
- Help you to clarify your
professional objectives and goals
- Align
your values, goals and actions
- Keep you accountable for progress
in a
defined, structured program
- Offer support, and challenge you when
required
- Keep you focused
- Help you expand existing skills and build
new competencies
- Allow you to expertly address challenges
in your approach to change
- Reinforce
changed behavior
- Create new ways of
approaching and doing
things that benefit your professional performance

How Does Executive Coaching Help
Physicians?
Physician Executive Coaching helps by giving you
the opportunity to partner with another person, who acts as your
sounding-board and objective guide as you define and make your way
through professional transition in your life.
Physician
coaching clients approach us for a variety of issues, including:
- Needing help to break free from a feeling of being "stuck" in their professional lives
- Wanting help to clarify a new idea or feel out a new opportunity they have
- Wanting or needing to figure out better
ways to communicate with, lead, or motivate their clinical staff
- Managing difficult people and starting
"critical conversations" with colleagues
- Dealing with their own feelings of
frustration, burnout or inaction
- Wanting to enhance their leadership
skills when they've transitioned into a new or more demanding
role
- Needing to enhance their business-related
competencies
(e.g., presentation skills, meeting facilitation, delegation, project
management, etc.) if they've left clinical practice and have moved into the corporate world
Our coaching programs are completely individualized to address whatever
it
is that the coachee wants to accomplish. You drive the agenda, we
provide the structure.
What Exactly Does Executive
Coaching Look Like?
Typically, initial coaching programs are three months long, broken into
three phases:
1.
Our "discovery phase",
where we use specific instruments, interviews and focused discussions
to explore your specific strengths and/or any barriers that may be
impeding your current professional success
2.
Our "strategic
blueprinting phase", where we clearly define your goals,
key steps, and create a measurable action plan for you to implement
3.
Our "implementation
phase",
where we meet for one-on-one coaching sessions to discuss challenges,
progress and to keep you on track an moving towards your goals
At the end of our three phases, we will
conduct a Final
Assessment Meeting,
to work through your implementation success and/or to discuss any next
steps.
